Owl Has Flown Paragraphs 19-20
In this essay Birkerts is saying that although verticle thinking is more difficult to achive, it is more fulfilling that horizontal thinking. The idea of verticle thinking is to go in depth with a subject, or text. To reread and relook at something over and over again to gain a full understanding of what it is your studying. Today we still do this with fine arts, like an art gallery. No one goes to a gallery and just glances at each piece and keeps walking by. You stop, take your time trying to figure out what the message is in the painting. I feel that although taking the time to really discover what something is about is difficult it is fulfilling. Using the example of the art work, when you look at a piece for a while and begin to understand what is going on there is a sense of understanding and accomplishment that is unmatched by most other things. The idea of understanding what most people don't is a great feeling and it is fulfilling.
