Michaelas Reading Response #3

Birkerts’s approach in his project is telling people that we need to read and write with value. He is trying to tell us that we need to understand depth, wisdom, and resonance when it comes to reading anything. Back in the day we use to read only what was available to us. It could have been two to four books and people re read those books. This gave them the chance to look deeper into what was being said by the writer. Now people just skim over material and can read part of articles by texts they get from emails, the internet, or even through friends. People in this time aren’t re reading things to understand the meaning as much or taking the time to see what the truth may be. When people only get part of the story these leads to issues and can cause more unnecessary drama in this world for everyone. As we lose our depth these may lead to people being more stupid and is bad. Birkerts just wants people to understand the difference and take the time before it’s too late and we all become dumb. His approach in telling this is very informative and helpful. We will just see how people take this and what they will do to help us not become dumb.
The passage I chose is: Wisdom is the knowing not of facts but of truths about human nature and the process of life. This means to me in order to have wisdom you must not only know the facts but the truth behind. You must know how it works and have a true understanding of what it may be. “It” means anything.
The passage appears a little bit in to the essay. It fits in with the three main parts of what Birkerts is explaining. He explains about depth, wisdom, and resonance. I think it’s one of the main parts because I understand more about wisdom then about the other two parts he is trying to talk about. I know to have wisdom one must not just know about it but experience it as well. That makes sense. If someone says that the best ham sandwich is at Subway then people would go there and see if it really is the best. Not only by tasting it but looking into the sandwich and what it is made up of. Looking at the “other” competitors that Subway may have and figuring out what really makes “the best sandwich” in general. This to me lets me know whoever may do this that I could accurately trust them because they didn’t just agree through taste but took the time to “really” figure the situation out. This passage is really important to understand what wisdom really means and how one may get more wisdom in his or her life. People don’t always take the time to look deeper in situations and go off by what they hear or read. This isn’t always the best and Birkerts is obviously trying to send that message to everyone. If we don’t take the time to read things and figure out there meaning then like he said we all could become dumb. As the environment changes around us so does how we get our information. It’s up to us to not lose that and by not forgetting how we use to thing is the most important to understand.
I’m going to connect his passage with the video text article. What I got from video text is that people are getting false hope through visions of what life “should be” or “could be”. Its advertisements of all the glory and the good their product may be or places you could go to and are ever so happy! The video text and what Birkerts is saying that don forgot the true meaning to how we once got information and how we use to read information. The two talk about our advisements in life and we must not forget how we use to do things because then we will be forever changed and possible lose really important tools people have learned over and over for many years. One may answer Birkerts is that what he is saying has truth as well as what the others are saying and people need to really understand it and not take it as just negative information. So far all what I have read has opened my eyes and I really understand what they are saying. But not only is it my reasonability but as well as our teachers. Teachers must not only teach ways of the past but figure out ways to fit it with today’s technology! It’s all a big task but we must all do before it’s too late!
