This is a commercial for Geico Car insurance. It starts out with the Geico gecko talking to another gecko about Geico Insurance. He starts out by stating, “Everyone wants to save money on their car insurance.” This statement tells you what the commercial is about and what the advertiser is trying to sell. Then he makes a comparison that asking if someone wants a free quote is like asking if they want free pie and chips. This comparison makes it seem like a stupid idea NOT to ask for a free quote. They are saying that not only is it free, but its awesome and you can benefit from it in a good way. The gecko then says, “Who doesn’t want free pie and chips?” Which furthers the argument that theirs no reason not to ask. He also says, “pie and chips, you can get them anywhere. But Geico quotes, made from scratch, Just for you.” This can be interpreted as the pie and chips being other car insurance companies. And they are saying that Geico is unique and made “just for you,” So they are original and made suited to your needs.
This commercial might need some knowledge of Geico’s other commercials to truly understand. The gecko is very famous and is Geico’s icon. He represents Geico. In the commercial he is talking to another gecko (or some animal of that type of species). So it is his own kind. Although, he is telling it to go the Geico.com, which is on the internet, so that gecko would not have access to it. That part of the video is to inform the viewers of what to do if they want their product. In this case, a free quote.
The cute little gecko ties you into the commercial. If it was an ugly animal, viewers wouldn’t be that interested. But because it is an adorable and tiny animal, you are more drawn in. The gecko has a subtle accent too, which adds to it’s cuteness. It makes a person want to listen more and be more tuned in to what the commercial is actually trying to put across. The gecko was the perfect animal for the company, in my opinion. The two words together, Geico gecko, sound like they fit and it makes one want to say it. They also have a little saying, “15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance.” This is their famous quote that most people know. Its not very creative, but its catchy.
