New Literacy

In his recent work, Clive Thompson wrote an essay called, “on the new literacy” in this essay he talks of how texting and internet has actually help are society become the most literate out of all the past generations. Thompson believes that we may be on the verge of a writing revolution, the kind we have not seen since the Greek civilization. He compares to different professors views, on a text and other modern ways of communicating. English professor John Sutherland from the university college of London say’s,” Facebook encourages narcissistic blabbering, video and PowerPoint have replaced carefully crafted essay’s, and texting has dehydrated language onto “bleak, bald, sad shorthand” (par.1).
In other words, Sutherland believes that because of are modern technologies we know longer take the time to learn the English language the way we use to. Thompson then references to Andrea Lunsford who believes because we spend so much time emailing and texting we have a greater since of addressing are audience when writing, because we do it so often out side of a class room. Thompson seems to agree with Lunsford speaking about how because to use the internet almost everything requires being able to read and write. My own view is that it seems that we hear a lot of negative effects the internet and texting has on are society, so it was so interesting to hear of some good ones. The more you think about it though the more that makes sense. Personally I email or text my friends daily, and you don’t think about it as a chore it is an easy way of keeping in touch. But that requires being able use grammar to write and that seems like such a second nature because you do it so often. In school when you write an essay or paper you are writing for your teacher so you write in a different way you would your friends because it is an assignment and should be taken seriously. You would never use text talk in a term paper because that would sound ridiculous, there is a time and place for that and most people know it. I personally agree with Thompson if you want to brose the web you need to be able to read, if you want to text your friends you need to be able to write. In are society those things are necessary, because technology requires it. Even TV can require reading knowledge if you watch an ad and want to buy there product you have to be able to reading the ordering information on the screen. Technology hasn’t killed the English langue it has given it new life. If your reading this essay on the blog right now there is an another example of technology working. We can view and read each others opinions because of what technology has given literature. Because of technology we have the freedom to instantly share are opinions with anyone any ware at any time and that requires being able to write in a way people understand.
