Matt's Times : flinstones smoking ad

This commercial, aired around the late sixties, is about the Flintstones. The first scene that takes place is of Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble having a neighborly chat over the garden wall whilst Fred’s wife Wilma mows the lawn. We then see that Barney’s wife, Betty is outside beating a rug. Fred commenting to Barney decides “they sure work hard don’t they Barney” and Barneys reply “Yeah, I hate to see them work so hard.” Suddenly Fred has an idea “Let’s go around back where we can’t see them”. Behind the house both men relax with their backs to a boulder. Barney wondering out loud to Fred “Gee we aught a do som’in Fred” Fred thinks that a nap would be a good idea, but Barney thinks they should instead smoke some Winston cigarettes. Both men go on to describe how Winston is the epitome of all cigarettes, that it is healthy and delicious. Finally the Wilma and Betty notice these bums relaxing and smoking, so as Fred exclaims the Winston jingle, Winston’s tastes good like a cigarette should, the women throw some cleaning supplies at them so as to get them to work.
After watching this commercial it is obvious that what are being sold are Winston cigarettes, but how are thy doing this?
The first thing we see is two guys hanging out after works chatting together while their wives keep the house clean. Being normal guys they go behind the house not only to take a nap, but to hide from the work. This point identifies with most males. Furthermore they decided to smoke a cigarette; this is the selling part of the ad where Fred and Barney, it seems, could go on forever about how amazing this cigarette brand is. Finally the women catch up with them and forcing them to get up and start working. Although I do not believe that this commercial is focused towards women, I suspect that many men can see that this has happened to them. The guys shuffling off chores to pursue their naps , when someone has him come home to work.
