Summary On "Is Google Making Us Stupid?"
In the essay "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by Nicholas Carr he brings into consideration that the way technology is set up today in our modern world tends to make people less likely be able to focus on one single thing for long amounts of time. Carr is stating throughout this article that it really isn't Google that is doing this but more so just the internet as a whole. When we spend time on the internet we are from one page to the next as fast as we can just so we can learn little bits and pieces of information and it has hindered the way we think and concentrate today. Carr states "The Idea that our minds should operate as high-speed data-processing machines is not only built into the workings of the Internet, it is the network's reigning business model as well"(Carr 29). What Carr is stating here is that when we are on the Internet we are just bombarded with flashing texts on the side of screens and more links in the reading saying here is the definition of this or click here for more on this. We click from page to page and just go through more and more information and it hinders how we think in general as people and as Americans. From what I have seen is that humans have a true visual fascination. We as people see something flashing and that is bright and pretty and we are more then likely to look at it and see what it is, more so then the black text that is on the screen what we were originally working on. Carr is bringing into consideration that this is how these Internet sites are making their profits, the more people they have click on these links the more money they make so they try and make these things the most visually appealing they can. The fact that it makes us get into the habit or clicking from one thing to another and not to stay on one piece of writing just carries over from Internet habit to an everyday habit. These has happened with lots of inventions and the big one that Carr related it to was the Clock. No one ran off of time back in the day and then when the clock was invented we went off of a schedule. We would eat at 6 o clock then go to bed at 9 o clock where as before the clock we just went off of true instincts. Technology has been doing this to us for quite sometime and I don't think this will ever end since we are so vastly improving all technology we have.
