Nick Carr in Is Google Making Us Stupid? Is kind of funny in the way he writes. I am of the opinion that one of Carr’s main arguments is that literature in many different forms although in reality is actually quite short is viewed as getting longer and longer. I saw this in Carr’s writing although it was only about seven pages it seemed never to end and I because f this I did not really understand what I had read until as a class we went over it. This however is not what I think the central claim Carr’s writing is.
I believe that the central claim of Nick Carr’s writing is that the internet is taking over it is helping with daily tasks, and what is more Carr is claiming that it is not going away and that we need to rewire our brains and adapt to this new phenomenon because or else we will be in trouble.
Another claim that Carr makes is the same as in my first paragraph that many people who use the internet are not reading books as much because they get bored of them or think that they are “too long”. I fully understand this claim and can see it working in my own life. When I was younger I used too read a lot but in the past years that “need to read” has declined to a point where I can barely read a few paragraphs before my attention begins to wander and I just cant understand what I am reading anymore. I am actually not proud of the fact that I barely read anymore I think that this goes back to scholes essay where he claims that the less you read the less wisdom you gain.
The third most pertinent claim in Carr’s paper is that in his own words “The idea that our minds should operate as high-speed data-processing machines is not only built into the workings of the internet, it is the networks reigning business model as well.” In other words the internet is built to model humans how stupid is that and I think this claim Is important because it compares that if humans aren’t going away yet then the internet is not either.
My own claim is similar to that of Carr’s ant that is the internet is here and as humans we need to adapt even though in retrospect it may not be a good idea. I think this way because reading from books is what helps inspire wisdom and in the internet a person can read the sum of a book and learn the “aesthetics” of it but not understand at all what any of it means. But all the information n the internet is good because you can learns so much so fast but the problem is Is that is any of that information true and do yu you know if it is reliable.
