Reading Response 5
In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” By Nick Carr, the main claim or most essential claim that goes with his article is that Our minds, the way we think, and the way we read are changing because of the fast paced nature of the internet. I believe this is the most essential claim in the article because Nick points out throughout the paper that we are changing. He says that when he says “and what the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. That connects with the essential claim because since we cannot concentrate for very long than we can will not be able to avoid to not use the internet to read. I myself don’t like to read and occasionally I go onto the internet to see if I can read an entire novel by reading a few pages. I have done that a few times when I didn’t have time to read a book do to playing soccer or hanging out with my friends. Some evidence that Carr uses is that “Old media have little choice but to play by the new-media rules. To keep themselves alive.” Why I think that is evidence is because years ago most people didn’t have internet which means the people probably had TV. Since the internet has been way easier to find information than the TV, Television has been losing its popularity especially with teens. Now that internet is cheaper than Cable Television, Television had to make changes. Some changes were like making their prices cheaper and by doing a package that you get 3 for 1 like Comcast. Internet is taking over and we can’t do anything to stop it.
I agree that internet is taking over the media world and is making us stupid because my experience is that I sometimes don’t want to read a book from cover to cover and so I just go to Google and type in the name of the book and it tells me what it is about in 5 pages rather than 300 pages confirms it. I am not a big reader and the internet is making it a lot easier to not have to read. I play lots of video games and there are secrets on the games that you have to find to unlock achievements or other bonus things that are very useful. Now if I wanted to find out the secrets I could go to Google and type in what I a want and it comes right up with all the different ways to do it. Years ago you didn’t have the resources like we do now to find out all the different achievements for the games. This doesn’t just include games it works with books and all sorts of things like those. I feel that Google is making us stupid do to the lack of reading we do as students and is pushing us in the wrong way and many years later we may not be able to turn around like we can now.
