Well, I'm Bree. I'm 17 and working on getting a transfer degree to continue college at Western...or wherever I can afford for that matter. But I'm shooting for Western where I plan on majoring in psychology and eventually working in social work or counseling; though I originally wanted to major in english I figured out that wasn't really my strongest point.
This is my second quarter at WCC, I am a full time Running Start student from Nooksack HS. I've only been going to public school for 4 years, I was homeschooled until 9th grade which was when I decided I should probably start actually learning something beyond a 5th grade level...
I adjusted surprising well to high school and also to Whatcom.
I have 2 younger foster-siblings (Angel, 4 and Jesse, 4mo) and I mention them now because I'll probably end up mentioning them in a later post. My family has been doing foster care since I was 8, and I think that has been one of the biggest influences in my life. It's made me try really hard to always look at different aspects of a situation, and to look deeper than whats on the surface; which can be difficult sometimes but I think that ultimately it will make me a better, stronger person.
The most frequent forms of writing which I do are:
Email
Texting
Creative writing
Essays
My favorite type of writing changes weekly, sometimes daily. However, since my junior year of high school I have consistently been fond of writing essays. I don't know why this is, and I find it rather strange; but writing research papers just makes me happy. I don't go around writing essays about every thought that I have, I don't love them that much. I just enjoy writing them for classes. I've never been able to make an outline of an essay I'm going to write, it makes me less organized, so I free write and make the outline later if it's required for a grade (ridiculous, I know). I typically don't do well writing in-class essays, when I'm given an alloted amount of time: but I find that when I'm at home I finish quicker than I would have if I were given, say, and hour and twenty-five minutes. So I guess my environment is really the key to how I write.
I enjoy this type of writing the most because it's what I'm good at and as I mentioned, it makes me happy. I've tried writing fiction, but I just don't get very far. When I'm researching a topic I'm usually more creative and can express my ideas more clearly. This type of writing also allows me to actually retain the information I learn, and when I complete an essay I feel like I've done something worthwhile. I think this type of writing will benefit me later in life, as well as help me think more critically about the information I'm learning now. I'm looking forward to learn how to do that even better in this class.
