Summary 1

In his recent work titled, “The New Literacy“, by Clive Thompson, suggests that new technology in society is not burdening young peoples writing like many people our suggesting that it does, but he is saying that it actually is improving it. In way of the article a Professor from University College of London English, John Sutherland, says that “texting dehydrated language into “bleak, bald, sad shorthand” and that “PowerPoint have replaced carefully crafted essays.” Sutherland believes that today’s modern society of young people using the technology that has come out to write is destroying the way things need to get done and that young people really don’t know how to write. The other point in the paper is from Andrea Lunsford, a writing and rhetoric professor at Stanford University, says “those twitter updates and lists of 25 things about yourself add up” and “ before the internet came along, most Americans never wrote anything, ever, that wasn’t a school assignment”. Lunsford studied “the work from her first- year students, she didn’t find a single example of texting speak in the academic paper.” Andrea Lunsford believes that the modern day society way of technology is more of a way for students to write then a burden to their writing. The way that students today our writing online which is for a audience, this is how writing is suppose to be for audience. Many studies that show students writing for audience show their best writing skills and shows many ideas of writing as their best writing skills. Even though, Thompson doesn’t say it directly he believes that technology today is improvement to society and that is doesn’t change the way people write today. My own view is that technology does encourage people in society to write more, social networking with other students, and many different ways to write in different ways. I do believe that sometimes there is students who don’t change the way they write from their texting form to academic writing and in society there is more then books to look at these days to research. Like the internet you could look up anything with a click of a button with never leaving the place you our doing your work. The way cell phones and emails work today sending messages to one another is easier because the go straight to that person then waiting to call them. Many older generation people today believe that technology is ruining the minds of young people and destroying the way they our writing, but really it is moving us as a society to new levels. It is moving writing to new way and also showing new skills. The writing issue is important to people in society because it is the way how things are done for how people find out stuff in society. For sure writing in society today is promoting levels that we wouldn’t have gotten to without the internet and it has kept people close to news and family.
