Today’s social media has changed not just by word of mouth, but by world of mouth. Eric Qualman thinks social media has become a fad. It has taken many years in technology to be where we are today. This is how many years it took to reach 50 million users for the radio it took 38 years, TV took 13 years, and the internet took 4 years. That’s been a big help as peoples generations keep changing. People now rely more on the use of the internet for finding any type of information like keeping in contact with people, watching TV, planning trips, and much more. Eric Qualman researched information about social media and put it in a video. His video states many changes about how people do things today then say 60 years ago. The video says by 2010 Gen Y will out number Baby Boomers. 96% of them have joined a social network. Myspace and Facebook are two major networks people to go to socialize. Facebook has added 100 million users in less then 9 months. One of the fastest growing segments on Facebook is 55-65 year old females! If Facebook was a country it would be the Fourth largest with The United Sates in Third Place, India in Second, and China in first. Facebook still continues to grow and who knows how more advance it may be ten years from now. Dating on the internet is a major social gathering as well. The video stated that 1 out of 8 couples married in the U.S last year met via social media. With peoples busy schedules today it makes sense to go to dating websites for help to meet new people. Students today now have the option to do their school work either in class or online. In 2009 according to the U.S Department of Education study revealed that on average, online students out performed those receiving face-to-face instruction. 1 in 6 higher education students are enrolled in online curriculum. Not only that but how students research their class assignments its not by books anymore but by online informational sources. One of these is Wikipedia. Wikipedia has over 13 million articles!. Studies show its more accurate than Encyclopedia Britannica; If you were paid a $1 for every time an article was posted on Wikipedia you would earn $156.23 an Hour! Blogging is another popular thing to do. 34% of bloggers post opinions about products and brands! Do you like what they are saying about your brand? You Better! People care more about how their social graph ranks products and services than how Google ranks them! 78% Of Consumers trust peer recommendations! Only 14% trust advertisements! Only 18% of traditional TV campaigns generate a positive ROI! (Rate of Return) 90% of people that can TiVo ads do. Successful companies in social media act more like Dale Carnegie and less like David Ogilvy Listening first, selling second. Successful companies in social media act more like party planners, aggregators, and content providers than traditional advertisers. Still think social media is a fad? Welcome to the World of Socialnomics. Are we ready?
My own view is that I agree with what the video had to say. As we all continue to grow so does the environment around us. I remember when I was first introduced to the internet. I used it to email my friends and family. Got to play games thanks to links and free trails. As I grew so did it. Now not only do I still email but now can see what my friends and family are up too thanks to Myspace and Facebook. I can find information about on my school reports and have access to almost anything. It makes things easier in how I do things in my everyday life. Some people says it makes us lazy In some cases but if for example teachers don’t want us to use the internet for research papers then they should update books because a lot of books that you find today are from older times. We cant always relay on outdated books to be accurate in today’s time. Its all trail an error with new technology but if people are liking it, it will only continue to grow. And I have no problem with that. Its something we have to face and live in the today’s time. Maybe peoples morals can stay the same over many years, but on how and where we get our information wont always be the same.

I like how you talked about Eric Qualman's video and how that technology is growing exponentially. I liked how you had a lot of examples to explain technology's growth and to show that it is still advancing. I think that if you are summarizing, maybe add some quatation marks to show it came from a video because it seems as though the examples are your own words, but I understood what you were trying to get at. Nice work!!
ReplyDeleteYou really informed the reader of Eric Qualman's video, and that was very helpful for me. I liked all of the details you inserted, so good job with that! Your explanation of what you thought of the video was also good because you explained yourself nicely. Maybe you could make it clearer about what information you gathered from the video, like adding quotation marks or using more names. Something like that. Otherwise, good work.
