Nicholas Carr wrote an article called "Is Google Making us Stupid?". In his article he talks about whether or not techonology will help us in the long run. Studies have shown that people have a harder time reading long pieces of literature due to to the fact they are used to short pieces of information that they scan over on the computer. Carr notes, " Just as there's a tendency to glorify technological progress, there's a countertendency to expect the worst of every new tool or machine." Carr is saying is that some people may love the idea that technology is advancing so rapidly, but there are also always going to be people who look at it critically. Are those people just scared of change; or are they cautious for a good reason? Carr goes on to refer to the fact that back when Socrates was around he used to beleive that if people wrote down information they needed to remember it would make them become forgetful. There is truth to this, but that wasnt that the answer. He didnt see that reading writing would help spread new ideas and expand our knowledge rather than condense it.
Carr doesnt really think that Google is making us stupid, he thinks that it is changing the way we think. Like different tools have done for us in the past. He just wants people to see all the things that have been changing rather than just focusing on how technology makes life easier.
