Google made me write this.....

In the article written by Nicholas Carr “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” He explains how the computer might be changing the way we think and act today. He goes on to talk about his own personal experiences on how the internet may be responsible for his own scattered thoughts and the reason that he can no longer enjoy a long book. Carr talks about how when people go online they tend to jump from link to link causing this way of reading to overspill onto how people read long books. Many people find themselves loosing concentration after just a few paragraphs. Carr states “The internet is a machine designed for the efficient and automated collection, transmission, and manipulation of information”. Carr’s point is the internet was designed to use as another way of controlling people, just like Taylor’s system. Frederick Winslow Taylor was the man responsible for the experiments he carried out at Midvale steel plant in Philadelphia aimed to improve the efficiency of the plant’s machinists, By recording, timing and breaking down every movement of the machinists as well as the machines, he was able to come up with a precise set of instructions to improve the factory’s’ productivity. Carr uses Taylors “system” as evidence to back up his own claim about the internet possibly being used in the same way. Carr also uses the Industrial revolution as evidence to back up his claim. With the invention of the steam engine, many manufacturers wanted the maximum speed, maximum efficiency and maximum output. This is something that is still with us and in demand today but applied to computers. Due to power that that computers hold, many of us today rely on computer engineers and software coders to help us if we have issues with our computers therefore taking the power away from ourselves. We have become so dependant on computers. It is making us loose control on our lives and minds. It has been discovered that if you use the computer for long periods of time that you start to act like the computer. This is something that Google and many others are excited about. They want the computer system to come before man. Carr believes that this is something we need to keep ourselves aware of. Carr puts a very strong and daring claim out for the world to see, but manages to back it up with sufficient evidence and pulls the reader in and make them question how there actions might of changed since using the computer. Carr’s work is both eye opening and credible.
