In the reading called “The Owl Has Flown”, the author named Sven Birkerts is discussing how our reading these days has poor depth, resonance, and wisdom. Our reading makes it easy and quick, we don’t spend time going deeper in the readings like readers used to in the past (depth). What readers used to do was to explore the reading and find the meanings or message in the text, and think deeply about it. Compared to the readers now, we read it for that moment and just want to get it read fast.
Sven is trying to remind, or show us, that we don’t forget the depth, resonance, and wisdom in the reading and writing. He wants readers to see how it’s important and that we should use it more often and understanding the depth, wisdom, and resonance.
“In our culture, access is not a problem, but proliferation is. And the reading act is necessarily different than it was in its earliest days.” What Sven meant by “proliferation”, it means that there are more ways to access that people just read less or write. In that passage, I believe that he is trying to say is that there is an increase of many different texts that makes our reading and writing poorly just because of many access’ to different texts just makes us look at them instead of really reading them in depth, like readers used to in the past. I am sure there are people who still read and write using depth, wisdom, and resonance, just not as many readers as there used to be.
The passage I read, that is one of the key parts of the essay, was on the second page where he is discussing how people used to read and write in depth, wisdom, and resonance then he compares to the readers now. Showing that us readers in the present are fading away from depth, wisdom, and resonance and why are we sliding away from it. This is a important passage, because we can see how many different texts that are just changing our views of reading and writing. This passage helps me understand the essay to compare the way we used to read and write in the past.
Sven’s reading connects to this reading I read while ago called “The New Literacy”, by Clive Thompson. In “The New Literacy” it discusses how technology is being used more, how it changes our reading and writing. In Sven’s reading, he discusses about how our writing and reading changed due to new style texts and how we don’t read in as much depth as the past. They both talk about how things has changed and how we should still use the way to read and write as in the past. I believe that Clive Thompson would say that you can still be in depth, wisdom, and resonance with technology and different readings these days.
