In this Pepsi commercial “Pepsi the Choice of a New Generation,” found on YouTube.com. It has Michael Jackson’s music “Thriller” playing and he is singing revised words featuring Pepsi. The commercial starts with showing Michael Jackson inside a convenience store in a poor suburban city wearing his white glove and leather dress attire. The video moves to outside the store, where there are young boys and girls, who are of different nationalities, are trying to act and dance like Michael Jackson, and they are carrying a juke box down the street. Across the street are young men that are dressed in black leathers. As one of the younger boys is dancing down the street while drinking a Pepsi, he backs into Michael Jackson, and then the entire group starts dancing with Michael Jackson. The young children now have the ability to do the Michael Jackson’s dance moves and his famous moonwalk dance steps. Then, Michael Jackson and the young men (which turn out to be Jackson’s group members) leave the kids feeling great because they are drinking Pepsi, and have danced with Michael Jackson. The singing lyrics to the music are “You’re a Whole New Generation, You’re the Pepsi Generation, The Choice is up to You, Taste the Thrill of the Day, Feel the Pepsi way. The commercial ends with the words on the screen “Pepsi The Choice of a New Generation.
This commercial is aimed for young children of any nationality that have dreams of making it big like Michael Jackson did, or who may idealize him. It is filmed in poor suburban community to show anyone can drink Pepsi. By Pepsi using Michael Jackson and his music from “Thriller” it is relating to the thrill of drinking Pepsi. Pepsi is also focused on drawing the attention of the young children to drink Pepsi now, so that in future years they will continue to drink Pepsi and thus Pepsi will continue to thrive. It is unlikely that by drinking Pepsi you will become the next “King of Pop.” It does instill the thought that Michael Jackson endorsed Pepsi; therefore, people might be tempted to purchase Pepsi rather than Coke or another leading national brand. I think this is a good advertising technique because the children are the next generation and the future.
