Man Beer is Funny

The shot starts with a beautiful woman in a silk robe walking down an elegant hall to a bathroom with a hot bath drawn in an amazing circular granite bathtub. After disrobing and lowering into her tub to relax the shot pans out to take in the whole room. That’s when out of no where a stark naked man does one of the most impressive cannonballs I have ever seen. After his graceful entrance he snatches up a beer that had been sitting chilled near the tub, opens it, and takes a big swig with a sigh of enjoyment. Only then do you get to see the woman bedraggled and by the look on her face that is none to happy. His noticing the look asks “What?” That’s when the slogan is voiced over “Some drink it because their responsible. Some drink it for the taste.” Humor is a great medium for recognition, and this Australian beer company knows it. The idea here is that beer drinking men are irresponsible and to the regret of the women around them. There are two demographics appeased here. One the women that have experienced this kind of blatant (all be it foolish) disrespect, and men that have been the “unintentional” insulters. The idea is that men make mistakes like this and women have to deal with it. The commercial also speaks from the man’s perspective that no harm was meant, and almost comes to the defense for him by casting it in good humor. I find this commercial to be almost approving of this kind of attitude. The cultural idea that men are apathetic is socially acceptable, and I would say encouraged here. This is an Australia commercial but I feel that this is an excepted norm in our society as well. Another idea presented here is that one shouldn’t be responsible when a beverage tastes good. Irresponsibility is a dangerous idea when dealing with alcohol. Yet again another not an accepted idea but practiced (if not completely intentionally) by many. I really don’t agree with the statements in this commercial, but I can’t help but laugh every time I it. I guess that’s job well done Hahn.
