Nick Carr’s claim is that people have changed the way people read, write, and research things thanks to technology. A lot of people can benefit from the use of internet and an example of that would be using search browsers like Google. A non benefit of the internet would be it gives people links with little information or not enough information but people take what they can get rather than doing more in depth research. Nick Carr said, “Google has short circuited his brain and feels someone has been reprogramming it.” He means that when using Google people can put any words or ask any questions then it will give all that it has for that topic or question that people could want. This then causes people to skim over the articles Google has to offer and then not taking the time to see what other information other search engines have to offer as well. This claim he has is important because it lets people see how they use Google and other search engines. It lets people see if they are taking advantage of Google or other search engines. Meaning people only use these search engines to get a quick answer. People aren’t taking the time to find out more information. Which is lazy and it’s not what people use to do back in the day when it came to research. People took the time to find out more information through books or teachers. Another important claim he says is, “The more they use the Web, the more they have fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing.” The “they” means people he has asked being friends, family, or whomever are experiencing the same thing when it comes to the web. People are experiencing pop links then moving their direction from one topic to another. The links are providing smaller articles for whatever topic and then creating people to start to read the articles differently. Meaning people are expecting quick answers. This would make people not want to read long articles when they can go to a source where it’s more convenience to them. This is important because people do like convince but it is more important to understand and research the whole article or whatever it may be. This causes people to go research in the library or just be open to view more sources then just some. A lot was said in the article of how people use to do things or how’s it effecting them today. Either way people need to realize they shouldn’t take short cuts because of convenience.
My own view of about what Nick Carr has to say is somewhat true and not. People should not just relay on search engines that the internet has to offer to get any and all types of information. I understand that people have learned to skim over reading articles and not fully read them. The searching of facts through library books has become less and less. People are going to search engines on the internet to find what they need and doing that they get what they want “faster”. One big search engine Carr mentioned was Google. Google’s creators say, “They have a desire to turn their search engine into an artificial intelligence.” Meaning they want Google to be “smarter” then the average person. They want people to rely on it for whatever people want to know. That could be good and bad. The good from it that people wouldn’t have to spend so much time trying to get information. The bad would be people would become lazy and get information to fast and easy. That meaning people wouldn’t take the time to find out more about the information they are looking for. Causing people to only know so much and when in fact they could know a lot more by taking more time to find that out. People could continue going to the library, find the sources behind what is being written, and compare more than one source with many other sources. I see myself taking the time to find information out on the internet by using more than just Google. Using books and comparing what many sources say on the internet is all very helpful. It lets me have a wide range of sources to use and only make the information I’m seeking become that much better by knowing a lot more of it. I want to not be lazy and let others know the importance of taking the time to read and even write.
