Gatorade all started at the University of Florida after the football team kept draining themselves out in the hot Florida heat. They needed more than water, so the assistant coach and some of the college's physicians came up with the idea for Gatorade. They added electrolytes, sodium, potassium, carbohydrates, and flavor to water; and it was history from there.
This Gatorade commercial starts off with short clips of famous athletes illustrating some miraculous plays. Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnet, Serena Williams, and the Jabbawockeez among others are shown in this short 28 second clip. The only music playing in the background is an intesnse pump up jam made up of drum beats and chanting. In the mix of these short clips are even shorter clips of a half drank Gatorade bottle getting slammed on a table in beat with the song. At the end of the commercial a man's voice comes on saying, "Gatorade, thats G." Finally, before the commercial is over you see the Gatorade website. The commercial leaves you hanging; wanting to go to the website to find out what G is exactly. This was all part of Gatorade's new advertisement plan they constructed after going through a rough patch competeing with Vitamin Water. This commercial aired during the 2009 Super Bowl. this ad was in fact aimed at directing the audience to a new online sports and entertainment network. When you go to this website a short clip of the same song from the commercial plays, then bringing you to the homepage.
In this commercial it implies that to be an all-star athlete you need to drink Gatorade. I also noticed in the commercial they incorperated diverse athletes. When you think of an athlete you generally think of a man, but Gatorade made sure to show powerful female athletes such as Serena Williams. In the end, the commercial shown was inspirational and encourages athletes to push themselves and rehydrate with Gatorade.

10. The music almost pumps up what the athletes are doing. Its very loud upbeat and shows some of the finest athletes at their best. The music emypathizes the dunks, the hang time the snowboarders are getting, and the excitment.
ReplyDeleteThis ad hopes the viewer will surrender to the assumption of the power of gatorade. The myth that is potrayed is that if you drink gatorade you will become a super athlete, superior to others. The reality of this is that gatorade has electrolytes and nutrients that are meant to replace those lost while working out or exercising. Many people casually drink gatorade as if it was a juice when its actually unhealthy unless you do loose those nutrients lost from excersise.
ReplyDeleteAlso their is hidden reflections of idealogical values of accecptance in our culture. In this commercial they don't just advertise the typical male football player drinking gatorade, but women, and african americans. Fifty years ago this would never have happened. This reflects how our culture has become more accepting of different races and sexes.
